Whiskeyjack says: hpr4563 :: Nuclear Reactor Technology - Ep 5 Fast Reactors

Posted at 2026-01-29 20:26:39 relating to the show hpr4563 which was released on 2026-01-28 by Whiskeyjack entitled Nuclear Reactor Technology - Ep 5 Fast Reactors

@mnw - Spent fuel from civil nuclear power plants is not suitable for making nuclear weapons as it has the wrong proportions of plutonium isotopes. Plutonium comes in multiple isotopes just like virtually all other heavy elements, and weapons require a high percentage of one specific isotope, which you don't get from spent civil fuel. Weapons grade plutonium is made in military reactors which are designed for that purpose and the fuel is rapidly cycled through to minimize the build up of undesired (for weapons purposes) isotopes.

As such, there is no direct connection between recycling commercial spent fuel (I covered a number of different recycling technologies in one episode) and nuclear weapons. I don't live in the US, but if there is a public perception there that there is such a connection, then it is likely this is the result of a misconception about the nature of the different isotopes of plutonium.

The main reason that most countries don't bother with recycling spent fuel is that a once through fuel cycle is cheaper. Those countries that do recycle fuel do so mainly for reasons of national security of energy supply. They simply wish to minimize their uranium imports by reusing fuel they already have.

A secondary reason is to reduce the amount of high level waste that must be stored by "burning up" the fissile isotopes of plutonium in a reactor. Much of the long lived part of nuclear waste is simply fissile isotopes of plutonium which can be re-used in a reactor as fuel.

If enough people have questions on this series, including topics that I have not covered, and post them as comments on HPR I would be willing to do a follow up episode covering those after the end of the series.

I am enjoying and look forward to the rest of the series. Do you think the US will ever wake up and start recycling its spent fuel? It seems like such a huge waste just to try and keep a small amount of fuel away from"the bad guys" or whatever they are imagining.

From what I've heard online, printers infamously have tons of issues with wasting ink and forcing vendor lock-in, so I would not be surprised if the official drivers do intentionally destroy output to force you on the upgrade treadmill.

Looks like you uploaded this episode the day after I was looking for a solution like this. Thank you for this episode. I'll give LocalTranslate a go, though I would prefer something that I could install outside of a flatpak that would run on a BSD system as well.

Posted at 2026-01-20 03:11:33 relating to the show hpr4557 which was released on 2026-01-20 by Klaatu entitled Why I prefer tar to zip

I never realized that tar compressed files are better at compressing than zip files! imo, its more of a mentality thing, like tar is literally just a series of files stitched together with some headers meaning it makes a lot more sense to apply a single-file compressor to it than something that is already applying some level of compression. There's also a bit of a compatibility issue, since most non technical users dont know what a tar file is or even that a zip file is a file, so zip is the lowest common denominator.

On that note, I think looking at 7zip would be an interesting experiment, since its newer and a lot more "well known"

Can't think of any other files but other than the home folder you want to be cognizant of /tmp I just remember the old days of PHP having binaries running out tmp folders... I had a script that would go through every single virtual machine and search for binaries running out of weird places and it would find root kits all over the place!

Hello أحمد المحمودي,

In the short term, you can use

`download-filename-format "%F: %t.mp3"`

which forces all feeds to download and show up as mp3.
I know this is not ideal, and I am working on a better solution.
In the mean time, you can use
`newsboat -C custom-hpr-config` for just the HPR config.

Cheers,
Archer72

P.S. HPR would like to hear you on a microphone of any sort.
